Cosstick Descendants

The following is a chart of Cosstick Descendants from about 1625 to the end of the 1800s. The connections between the first three generations have not been absolutely proven as records are fairly vague.

This chart was first published in 2007. Much of the detail in these charts was provided by other family history researchers and may contain gaps and errors. Thank you to those readers who have notified me of such omissions, however, I am no longer updating the page.

I you are looking for further details I would suggest searching Ancestry.com for people who are compiling Cosstick family trees.

There is a George COSTICK baptised on 12 Sept 1841, son of Samuel COSTICK. It is possible that this is actually Charles who was born 1841. The George who later came to Australia was clearly born around 1833 rather than 1841. The 1833 Parish Baptism Register spells his name as CAUSTIC, as are the parents names.

William's age in 1851 was given as 50, however it seems likely that he is the William COWSTICK baptised at Seaford in June 1798, giving an age closer to 52. Comments about Frances Cosstick from James Hillman:-

James Broad was a candle manufacturer from Lewes in Sussex. He married Frances Cosstick in 1845. Unfortunately any further research into both the Broads and the Hillmans from the transcriptions of the records is hindered by transcription errors in the spelling of the respective surnames (although of course Cosstick is one variation of many). The Broads are mis-transcribed as Brood in the 1841 census, Brand in the 1851 census, and Brodd in the 1861 census! However, in the 1861 census they have "Betty Costick", identified as James Broad's mother-in-law, aged 73 living with them.

James and Frances Broad's eldest daughter was called Frances Elizabeth, and she married my Great Great Grandfather, Edward Hillman (1828-1899) - a solicitor in Lewes. Edward's first wife died young, and Frances Elizabeth was Edward's second wife. They had 3 children, of which my Great Grandfather, Hubert James (1871-1939), was the eldest. Of Hubert's two sisters I know little, but believe that at least one emigrated to South Africa.

Hubert and his wife, Florence had four children of whom one (John Hubert) died in childhood before my own Grandfather, John Michael (1911-1993)(known as Michael) was born.

Hubert, Michael, and Michael's older brother Rex (1902-1973) were all solicitors in the same family firm - Hillman & Sons, in Lewes, as was my father, Bryan (1938-2007).

He lived with Mary Ann Hattery (Haddock), b. 25 Aug 1877 in Marshall, Iowa, USA, d. 29 Jan 1953 in Ridgetown, Ontario, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Ridgetown, Ontario.

It is reported that George met Mary Haddock around 1905 and six children resulted. But whether George and Mary were married is unknown. There is an immigration record for Mary Ann and five children and George Cosstick seeking admission to Port Huron, Michigan. Mary Haddock died on 29 January 1953 at Ridgetown, Ontario. Mary Hattery, born on 25 August 1877 at Marshall, Iowa, had previously married William Lee Haddock on 4 April 1894 in Perth County, Ontario. All her children had the surname Haddock including those suspected of being fathered by George Cosstick.

The 1880 Census of Wayne, Henry, Iowa indicates a M.A.Hattery aged 2, born IA, with the head of the Household being J.B.Stutzman. The child's mother had been born in Canada and the father in Ohio. Stutzman, aged 32, had been born in Ohio and his wife, aged 37 and named Barbara, also in Ohio. There were four of her children by a previous marriage also living with them. Their surname was Dieffenbach.

The 1880 Census of nearby Scott, Henry, Iowa lists Barbara Hattery, aged 28, widowed, born Canada, staying with the Culbertson family.

It is of interest that Mary Ann Hattery's mother was born Barbara Hoffmeyer, at new Hamburg, with her parents being John and Elizabeth Hoffmeyer. Caroline Dawe's two sisters, Mary Anne and Elizabeth both married members of the Hoffmeyer family, John and Henry and subsequently lived in Osceola County, Michigan.

The 1851 Census for Waterloo County Ontario (which includes new Hamburg) lists the family of John and Elizabeth Hoffmeyer. Barbara was not born until the following year.

Dear Author,

Descendant 117 Harriett Rose Cosstick married Raymond Terrence Cooper on 4 October 1947. Their only natural child was a son, Terrence James Cooper, born 30 July 1954. He is married to Donna and they have two children called Lauren and Glen. Harriett Rose Cooper (nee Cosstick) may well have been the only daughter of Grace Florence Griffiths (nee Cosstick), since they remained very close throughout life and Grace won a defamation case against locals who "alleged" that she had a child out of wedlock when "Rose" was born. Their "sibling" John Newman Cosstick was adopted, as was the second child of Harriet Rose Cosstick and Raymond Terrence Cooper, whose adopted name is Wayne John Cooper, born 10 December 1957 in Goulburn. That would be me. I have two children by my second wife, Alexandra Merrick Long, being Henry Charles Cooper (born 04 April 1990) and Charlotte Adelaide Cooper (born 11 September 1995). Henry went to Emgland to play cricket in Kent for Minster in 2008 as a semi-professional and plays first grade for Lindfield in the Sydney Shires competition. Unlike Sam he is a leg-spinner, but at least he is a bowler. My email is wayne23@hotmail.com

Hi
There needs to be a correction to reference 116, Thomas Edmund Cosstick. He actually passed away on 11th Sep 1996 and is buried alongside his wife at the East Maitland General Cemetery (Catholic Section). I can send you additional details if you like. The headstone that you refer to in 116 seems to relate to Thomas Munday Cosstick in your reference 25v. The names mentioned on the headstone and date seems to match. I have also seen a bit of confusion about Thomas Munday Cosstick's middle name as I have also see it as Edwin so unsure if Munday was correct. I'll leave it to you to check out further. I can be emailed at lfitzgerald@hotkey.net.au
and yes I am finding this information extremely interesting in updating my husband's family tree so thankyou.
